Passing the Torch
I just haven't had time for the site as I would have liked the past year (or more), and decided to give it to Intruder, our main admin for more than a couple years, to have forever and ever. If you're seeing this, we're still on the old server. Soon it'll be directing from a new server and macmentor will be run by Intruder and signal the next era of the site.
I think macmentor can only thrive under his care and I thank everyone who has made it what it is today. jen

Photo Contest 2005
The first one went so well, so many talented shooters in our group, let's do it again!
This time I want to try it a little differently, let's use Flickr, the hottest photo sharing site out there. FIve photos per entrant on any topic or subject matter. Contest entry ends September 30, 2005. Rules & Details below...
MacMentor Forums Widget
Macmentor mods Nufferkay, Nemesis and Jen whipped up a little widget for your Tiger dashboard so you can keep track of our switcher help forums better. It looks good and works even better!
It updates the 25 newest posts every fifteen minutes automatically, or you can refresh the list at will with a handy update link.
Logo Contest
I'm becoming more and more cognisant that we need a new logo, so I'd like to see your suggestions. Your ideas will be taken by me (Jen), a professional designer reproduced and whipped into perfection, so they don't have to be anything fancy, I'll take care of that! What does the name "macmentor" say to you, what visual would be best for new people to see to get who we are and what we do?
Rules:
Turn in your designs (limit two per person) to Jen via email by May 31, 2005.

Homepage vs Forums Or "Why Can't I Login?"
The homepage (here) and the forums (the message board) are run on two seperate systems. As such you need a login for both. You can find the register page for the forums here or click the "register" tab at the top right end of the tabbed menu bar from the forums. I suggest you make an account in both and set the same username and pass so you can remember it, and when you change one, go change the other. No it's not handy, but I don't wnat to mess with a good thing. You might remember our PHPBB powered forums were started in 2003, and this shiny fancy Geeklog powered front end came along in Decemeber 2004. While they could be integrated we'd lose some functionality in the fourms and they would be compressed into this middle frame instead of having the room they have. I don't want to change the set up we have so I do not have any plans at this time to integrate them in the immediate future for that reason. Once you set up an account here on the homepage set yourself with a 128x128 pixels (max.) avatar in your account then right click the graphic and get the url path and enter that into your forums profile for your avatar - and voila! - you've used the smae graphic on both systems/sides. You can change them as much as you want, just login over here and edit your proile. When you change your avatar here, it will change over there as well.
Photo Contest Results
We have a winner for the first MacMentor Photo Contest. I know folks say this, but in this case it's true, all the entries were stunning. You people can shoot! It made it really hard for the team to get to a decision. The voting was incredibly tight. The six finalists were divided but less than two points an the top three were split by 1/4 point. We had 27 entries from 9 entrants and had a field of 6 in the final round.
After all the tallies are done First place goes to Michael Eldredge (AKA: Livingfiction) with the photo "The Right Track" (shown to the right). Second goes to Shane Smith (AKA: Shen) and his photo "Powell rock foreground" Third was Dave Caolo with his Tiger Lily. Micheal wins $40 Gift Certificate on anything from the Apple Store/iTMS or a online store of his choice, an Apple User Groups T-shirt, and an Apple note pad or two. Shane wins a $20 Gift Certificate for iTMS, Dave gets one for $10 and they both get an Apple climbing hook keychain, and an Apple note pad as well. Congratulations all! |
